Pole Barn Continued...

This log started out 34" in diameter.
We had to cut off the outside with the chainsaw to use the Alaskan saw Mill to make the beam.

Terry ready to work.

Tim ready to supervise!

Terry working the saw. First cut off the top of the log.

The dog is the best helper!
She loves to go down to the mill and dig and play.
She doesn't look too depressed!

5 1/2"x 12"x 22' beam

It takes a long time to make this beam with the Alaskan saw mill but no other way to do it.

Reaching for the top!

Beautiful day to work!

Pulleys to ease the load.

Terry putting in the eye bolt for the pulley.

Finished with the framing.
Next on to the roofing and hopefully done before winter sets in.

Framing a Cover Over The Saw Mill

We are building a cover over the saw mill for the winter and it will sure come in handy next summer to keep the hot sun off too!
But first, we had to make a couple of beams that are longer than our saw can cut. So, it's back to the Alaskan Saw Mill which is a nifty attachment to a long chain saw.

Here's Tim resting on a 22' log that will become a couple of 2"x12"x22' beams:
Here the log is squared off on three sides and getting ready to be cut into beams:
Tim's taking the edges off:

This is a 5.5" beam that we cut down further into two 2.5" x 12" x 22' long HEAVY beams:
But the hard part is raising the beams up onto the poles and support joists!
That was done by two of us old guys. Yep, OLD GUYS RULE!

Here's Big Tim trimming off the tops of the poles. We used the extended height of the poles to attach pulleys and ropes to hoist those big heavy beams.

Back Porch Finished

A well deserved day of play at Spyglass.
Thanks dad for spoiling us!!!
Tim, Dad, Terry and Mindy ready to tee off at Spyglass.

Tim, Terry, Mindy and Dad, enjoying the day!

Birthday boys.

Tim and Terry wondering where the next hole is!

Thanks Timmy, Terry, Tyler, Chris, and all the other that helped to replace the back porch!

It was fun to make all the lumber for the back porch.
I have learned so much about the process of producing lumber from the trees we harvested from the property.
I still have so much more to learn.
I want to thank all those that have helped this summer. It has been a wonderful experience. Keep looking for more posts there is still a lot of work to do.
